Annual Huettentreffen
August, 2004
This
year's Huettentreffen was a brand new experience for me. It was the first
time that I attended the rally without my husband and traveled by car and not on
my motorcycle. Helmut had gone north to visit his critically ill mother
and I decided to head south with our son to the rally. The weather
forecast was for lots of rain and wind and so with my son being as tall and just
as heavy as I am, I decided not to try to drive on curvy, unknown roads in the
dark and the rain, I also do not have much experience with driving a fully
loaded bike with a passenger. So, now that I've made all my excuses, I'll
get on with reviewing the rally for you!
It
was rainy very heavily and dark when we finally arrived at the Huetten.
There were a lot of us that had a miserable last few kilometers. The last
road up the mountain seemed ever so narrow, twisty, wet, dark and endless.
Fortunately, the road conditions improved with daylight, the next morning it
seemed harmless. The view down into the valley made it all seem worthwhile.
Saturday, we visited the Transport museum. It was amazing to see every kind of transportation and its development. What an incredible museum, we spent the whole day there and I'm sure there was still quite a lot that we didn't manage to see.
The
evening gave way to our annual Raclette meal, served by our hosts and their
helpers, we look forward to it every year! Followed by the awards ceremony
where many of us, myself included, received our 5, 10 and 15 year attendance
awards. It's always great to return to these very special motorcycle
roads, meet up with old friends and make plans for next year. Thanks to
everyone who helped organize, host and helped out in the kitchen! already
looking forward to next year!
